Stroke is still one of the main causes of death and disability in older adults, but many seniors don’t know what their personal risk factors are or what they can do to avoid them. The good news is that seniors with home care assistance often do get the support they need so they can better manage their stroke risk and make necessary changes to their daily routine.
Understanding Risk Factors
Understanding one’s own risk factors is the first step in preventing stroke among older adults. While age itself raises the risk of stroke, there are a number of factors that make it much higher. One of the most significant is high blood pressure. Diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, and atrial fibrillation also make it much more likely that seniors could have a stroke. Other factors include smoking, drinking too much, and being overweight.
Not only do home care assistance providers help seniors understand their risks, but they can also help them monitor these issues by helping them check blood pressure, offering support with medication management, and making sure they attend necessary medical appointments.
The Importance of Medication Management
While medication management is always important, it is even more important when it comes to stroke risk, particularly in seniors who take blood thinners, blood pressure medications, cholesterol-lowering medications, or medications for diabetes. Each of these needs to be taken on time, every time, to ensure optimum health.
Seniors with home care assistance receive support with organizing their medications and with detecting and documenting side effects, enabling the information to be relayed to the medical team. In doing so, it creates a safety net that has a better chance of catching problems before they get worse.
Exploring Lifestyle Changes
Changes in lifestyle can greatly lower seniors’ risk of having a stroke, in addition to medical care. Home care assistance supports these changes and helps older adults understand which changes may matter most.
Some of the common changes that stand out include adding fresh fruits and vegetables to meal planning, reducing sodium and saturated fats, and managing weight through better food choices and gentle exercise, just to name a few.
Improving Awareness and Response Skills
Knowing the signs of a stroke is just as important as preventing one. Home care assistance providers recognize signs such as a drooping face, weak arms, difficulty speaking, severe headaches, vision issues, and balance problems, and can call for help immediately.
During a stroke, every second counts. Having someone there who knows what to look for can mean the difference between full recovery and permanent disability.
For seniors, stroke prevention is even easier with home care assistance by their side. Caregivers help them reduce their risk of stroke by managing medications, providing nutritional support, encouraging physical activity, monitoring vital signs, and being alert to symptoms. This partnership offers seniors the freedom to live independently while also receiving professional support that protects their long-term health and well-being.

This is not the first Home Care agency for Pat, she was the Director of nursing for Kimberly Nurses in 1980 and after the tragic passing of the companies president she opened and co-founded American Nursing Resources Home Health Agency. Pat opened and passed Medicare certification for ANRHHA Clayton and Washington, MO offices.
For Zachary, the name “Pear Tree” is a tribute to his beloved late friend; Wade Abbadessa. Wade worked at his family’s famous restaurant “The Pear Tree” in Macon, until his tragic death in September 2014. Wade lost his battle with a rare form of bone cancer at the young age of 26. His legacy will live on through our company.
