If your parent has mobility challenges and they want to continue living on their own, professional help is available to help them safely get around the house. Many adult children worry about helping their parent with things like getting in and out of bed or the shower, because they aren’t sure how to safely move their parent.
It’s ok. You’re not supposed to know that. But it is important that someone who understands the biomechanics of moving a senior who can’t lift their own weight helps them. Without professional help, you and your senior parent could both get hurt.
Personal care at home is professional assistance for seniors with mobility challenges who live at home. With personal care at home, your parent will have the safe and experienced support they need to get out of bed, get in and out of their favorite chair, and move around the house.
Transferring
Helping your senior parent get safely in and out of bed, the shower, or their favorite shower can be done either with transfer aids or by hand. The process is called transferring because the care provider helps your parent move their body from one location to another.
To make transferring easier, personal care at home providers may use aids like:
Gait Belts
A gait belt is one of the most common transfer tools. It is a sturdy belt that goes around your parent’s waist. The care provider holds the belt to guide and steady your parent as they stand, sit, or move from one spot to another.
This helps the caregiver keep a secure grip without pulling on clothing or risking injury. Gait belts help prevent falls and give your parent confidence during each step of the transfer.
Transfer Boards
A transfer board is a smooth wooden or plastic board used to help seniors slide from one surface to another. It can help someone move from a wheelchair to a chair or from a bed to a wheelchair without having to stand fully.
The board creates a bridge between the two surfaces. The personal care at home provider helps your parent scoot across it slowly and safely. Transfer boards work well for seniors who can sit upright and bear a little weight but struggle to stand.
Bed Rails
Bed rails attach to the sides of the bed and provide a secure surface for your parent to hold on to while sitting up, turning, or getting out of bed. They help prevent rolling, slipping, or losing balance.
A personal care at home provider can use bed rails to guide your parent into a steady position before standing. Bed rails also lessen the strain on both your parent and the caregiver by offering a stable point of support during each movement.
Pivot Discs
A pivot disc is a round disc placed on the floor under your parent’s feet. It makes turning easier and safer, especially for seniors who can stand but should not twist their knees or hips.
Your parent stands on the disc with help, and the care provider gently rotates them into the correct position, such as turning from the bed to a chair. Pivot discs reduce the chance of slipping and make turning movements smoother and more controlled.
Lifts, Such As A Hoyer Lift
For seniors who cannot stand or bear weight safely, a Hoyer lift can be a strong, secure solution. A Hoyer lift uses a padded sling that supports your parent’s body while the personal care at home caregiver raises and lowers them using the lift’s frame.
It can move your parent from the bed to a wheelchair, from a chair back to bed, or even to the bathroom. Lifts protect both the senior and the caregiver from injury. They allow transfers to happen gently, without strain, and with full support at every step.

His legacy will live on through our company.
