Four Fun Activities to Do At the Park With Your Senior

Getting out and being active is an important part of every senior’s life. Whether your loved one is physically fit or limited in her ability to be physical, a trip to the local park for at least 30 minutes each day can boost her overall health – physically and mentally.

But your loved one might think going to a small local park is boring, and encouraging him to put on his walking shoes and leave the home may be difficult. His home care provider might even have trouble getting him to go out for a stroll among nature without some incentive and something to keep him occupied while he’s out there.

Here are some fun activities your home care provider can do with your senior at the park:

Watch Birds

Birds are everywhere. There are not any parks out there that don’t have some type of birds that call it home. Bird watching can be a fun way to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park.

Before your loved one even begins, he needs to know what to look for. Have his home care provider bring along a bird spotting book or even upload an app onto his phone for help with knowing what birds are being spotted. Some apps and books even have areas where he can check which birds he’s spotted to keep track of them.

If possible, his home care provider should bring a pair of binoculars along as well to spot those birds that are farther away.

Clean Up the Park

If your loved one has a service-oriented heart, he might enjoy being part of the solution of keeping our planet clean by incorporating picking up garbage as he walks down a path. Keeping on top of left-behind litter is overwhelming for many parks, so this act of service is a great way to keep his community clean and safe.

Since bending over a lot can be physically taxing, consider buying your loved one a trash pick-up tool that will allow him to pick up garbage safely and without bending over. Having someone like his home care provider come along with a bag to drop the trash in can make it both an enjoyable and productive walk.

Photograph the Beauty

While a nice camera will produce some gorgeous photos, a smartphone is much lighter and can also produce some beautiful photos. Let your loved one’s creative side come out by having him take photos of all of the beautiful nature in the park.

Taking photos is a great way to slow down and really appreciate the smallest of details, which can do wonders for a person’s mental health. It helps them be present in the moment and set aside worries and concerns that weigh them down.

Once your loved one gets home, his home care provider can help him show off his photos on a social media account, print them out to display around the home or give them as gifts.

Connect with Neighbors

Whether it’s petting a neighbor’s dog or playing peek-a-boo with a child in a stroller, being out in a local park gives your loved one a chance to connect with neighbors. His home care provider can help with introductions and then reminders as to who he has met before to make those connections even stronger.
