10 Tips to Avoid Caregiver Burnout

  1. Just like the stewardess recommends on the airplane, “Take care of yourself first, then take care of your patient
  2. Use a home care company that offers respite services to give you time off on a scheduled basis.
  3. Plan a get-away to refresh your spirit and re-energize.
  4. Re-identify what you like to do for fun.
  5. Maintain contact with friends. Do not isolate yourself!
  6. Allow others to help when they ask.
  7. Get a massage, meditate, listen to soothing music, light candles or use aromatherapy or write in a journal.
  8. Exercise regularly and/or take a walk in nature.
  9. Stay in the present moment.
  10. Be kind to yourself. Life is not perfect…it is unpredictable and messy. Stay focused on what’s important—relationships, health and well- being.
